Your Heart, My Heart, Our Corazones

Every year in the month of February the American Heart Association has the campaign, "Go Red Por Tu Corazon", to raise awareness on heart disease for Latinas and women in general.

Heart disease is the number one killer of our mujeres.  Please raise awareness of the importance of taking care of your heart. We are all aware of the effects of breast cancer and cervical cancer to women, we need to reinforce the importance of good heart health also. To show support and raise awareness we hope that you will consider wearing RED on Friday, February 3, 2012.

Some of the  Facts:
via
  • Latinas are at a greater risk of heart disease, developing heart disease 10 years before any other ethnic group.
  • 1 out 3 Latinas is aware that heart disease is the number one cause of death.
  • Only 44% of Latinas know that heart disease is the number one health threat for women.
  • Approximately 8 million women in the US are suffering from heart disease, but only 1 out 6 will know it.
Heart disease is preventable.  In fact 80% of heart problem in women are linked to bad choices in eating habits, lack of activity (exercise) and smoking which are all changeable if you really put your mind to it.  Education is the key to prevention.

If you haven't had a physical recently, make an appointment. If you are over 40 and haven't had a stress test as recommended, ask your doctor to schedule one.  Make sure that you are your own health advocate.   Cardiovascular disease kills more that 435,000 women each year which is about one woman every minute.

Mujeres Make the Right Choices!!
