Did you know infant mortality is on the rise in the U.S. for the first time since the 1950s?
Or that worldwide, 1,000 pregnant women and girls die every day?
My Inspiration
Looking back, my childhood was relatively idyllic. I had two loving parents. There was never a time I went to bed hungry. I attended private school, and spent my summers away at camp. It wasn't until many years later, that I realized how much my mom sacrificed, so that I was able to have the childhood she never did. You see, my mom as the eldest of six children, had to work from a very young age to help put a roof over her head. There were no summer camps, slumber parties, nor college funds set up for her. Instead as a young woman she spent her days hovering over a sewing machine, clocking out after a long day, just in time to go to night school. Throughout it all, she never complained, just kept moving forward, so that we (her children) could "have it all". Her story reminds me what motherhood is all about. Not the perfectly painted picture we see in our favorite TV sitcoms, but more so the endless sacrifices, dedication, and pain you suffer silently, and willingly, for your child.
Global Motherhood
Johnson & Johnson and their partners support Global Motherhood with programs that meet the needs of moms and babies in the U.S. and around the world. At this year's LATISM conference, where I'm also a panelist, Johnson & Johnson will be showcasing some of the programs and initiatives they are doing for Global Motherhood. If you're going to the conference, look for the Arboretum 11 suite, and let's learn together what we can all do to truly use social media for social good. If you can't make the conference, you can still get involved! Follow the #InspireCare hashtag on twitter. Read the stories of other bloggers and mothers coming together in support of Global Motherhood. Check out Johnson & Johnson's site to find out more, and how you can get involved.
